Tour of Barcham Tree nursery and the National Trust Anglesey Abbey gardens. 29th June 2017

Set with the back drop of Ely Cathedral the tree nursery at Barcham is Europe’s largest container tree nursery with as many as 450 varieties available to see over a site of 300 acres. The nursery has been producing trees of the highest quality for over 30 years and offers interest to all, for whatever reason you are looking to plant trees. It is estimated that there are over 1.4 million Barcham trees growing within the U.K. landscape. So whatever city, town, village or garden you live by, you are never too far away from a Barcham tree!

This guided tour of the nursery will provide a great opportunity to see and hear about how this premium tree nursery produces quality stock for landscape schemes across the whole of the UK and Europe. Attendees will be shown around the site by Mike Glover, Managing Director of Barcham Trees. Mike is passionate about raising, growing, selling and planting trees and has a vast wealth of knowledge at his fingertips. As well as seeing the huge variety of trees in stock, you will get to hear about how the nursery developed their patented Light Pot system to produce the perfect root system for transplanting large trees and how the specialist selection team chooses the trees to meet the requirements of each order, to ensure customer satisfaction.

Late June is a perfect time to visit the nursery to see the trees in their early summer glory and overall this visit to Europe’s largest tree nursery is an opportunity not to be missed!

The second part of the day will be to one of Britain’s most beautiful gardens, Anglesey Abbey, which offer an abundance of interest and colour.  The 98 acres of landscaped grounds are divided into a number of walks and gardens, with classical statuary, topiary and flowerbeds. The grounds were laid out in an 18th-century style by the estate’s last private owner the 1st Lord of Fairhaven, in the 1930s.

Summer brings the magnificent sweeping herbaceous border packed with colour, the heady scent of the Rose Garden, dazzling dahlias, and the natural beauty of over 30 acres of wildflower meadows where over 50 species of wildflower have been recorded.

The Abbey and grounds are now owned by the National Trust, so although entry is free on this trip please do bring your membership card if you have one.
